Who knows your product better than your most loyal fans? If they can collectively agree on the best way to improve it, it must be good, right? Dell did it with &lt;a href="http://www.dellideastorm.com/"&gt;IdeaStorm&lt;/a&gt; (&lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/dell_20.php"&gt;our coverage&lt;/a&gt;), Starbucks did it with &lt;a href="https://www.starbucks.com/mystarbucksidea/default.aspx?jstest=true"&gt;My Starbucks Idea&lt;/a&gt; (&lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/my_starbucks_idea.php"&gt;our coverage&lt;/a&gt;), and Salesforce did it with &lt;a href="http://ideas.salesforce.com/"&gt;IdeaExchange&lt;/a&gt;. Now a new web app called &lt;a href="http://www.ideascale.com/"&gt;IdeaScale&lt;/a&gt; is offering that same basic premise as a packaged service for companies of any size.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What &lt;a href="http://www.getsatisfaction.com/"&gt;GetSatisfaction&lt;/a&gt; does for customer service, IdeaScale is aiming to do for research and development -- though perhaps on a more local, private level. IdeaScale offers a way for companies to solicit ideas and allow customers to rate, discuss, and brainstorm for the company. The app works in more or less the same way as the sites from Dell, Starbucks, and Salesforce. Users submit ideas, rate them via a Digg-style voting mechanism, and discuss them with one another.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img border="0" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/ideascale-screen.jpg" width="600" height="355" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The company can go in and mark off which ideas are being implemented or considered, and leave status updates for users curious to see how an idea is progressing from brainstorm to finished product.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;IdeaScale is currently in public beta and is a free service right now. Eventually, the company plans to offer both free and paid versions utilizing the "freemium" model that they already use for their &lt;a href="http://www.questionpro.com/"&gt;Question Pro&lt;/a&gt; app. IdeaScale has their own copy of the softare running at &lt;a href="http://questionpro.ideascale.com/"&gt;http://questionpro.ideascale.com/&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A more public implementation of the same idea is &lt;a href="http://featurelist.org/"&gt;featurelist&lt;/a&gt;, which takes the same Digg-style community feedback concept and makes it more public -- similar to GetSatisfaction's approach to customer service. &lt;br style="clear: both;"/&gt; &lt;img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=88643af8ef78d9746af251c7ab5e1a51" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=88643af8ef78d9746af251c7ab5e1a51" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?a=ZT4JLL"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?i=ZT4JLL" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=GO7BfQG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=GO7BfQG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=w5vLzuG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=w5vLzuG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=x8h2a5g"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=x8h2a5g" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=IRdaqLg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=IRdaqLg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=BurNPYg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=BurNPYg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=YhtbneG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=YhtbneG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~4/274894272" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/lateprocessingfromclick.php?postid=110"&gt;	&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-1460414643558749521?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/1460414643558749521/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=1460414643558749521' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/1460414643558749521'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/1460414643558749521'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2008/05/ideascale-crowdsourcing-r_30.html' title='IdeaScale - Crowdsourcing R&amp;amp;amp;D'/><author><name>Mayank</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00955621413404339630</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-7356881797377967762</id><published>2008-05-30T08:25:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2008-05-30T08:25:50.623-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Wine, Film and Books: Adaptive Blue Offers Open Format to Make the Web Smarter</title><content type='html'>&lt;script type="text/javascript"&gt;function CreatelfjsFunction106(){ document.getElementById('CreatelfBlogIt').innerHTML = '&lt;img src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/images/waiting.gif" alt="Waiting"&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/posthtml.php?postid=106"&gt;&lt;\/script&gt;';}	&lt;/script&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/adaptiveblue_may07.png" width="150px"&gt;Semantic web company &lt;a href="http://adaptiveblue.com"&gt;Adaptive Blue&lt;/a&gt; has &lt;a href="http://blog.adaptiveblue.com/?p=975"&gt;published&lt;/a&gt; what it hopes will become a standard for publishers who want to signal in their header tags when a webpage is primarily about a particular book, film, wine or other type of objects. From search to trend analysis to a richer browsing experience - the developments that could come from adoption such a standard are many.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Called &lt;a href="http://www.adaptiveblue.com/abmeta.html"&gt;AB Meta&lt;/a&gt;, the format was developed in concert with a number of other web companies and is aimed to be part of a larger effort to pick up where existing Semantic Web and microformats markup leaves off. It's simple and extensible.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When the meaning of web pages becomes machine readable - magical things can happen.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Bloggers who want to mark up particular pages or post pages with AB Meta can do so using Dougal Campbell's &lt;a href="http://dougal.gunters.org/blog/2004/06/17/my-first-wordpress-plugin-headmeta"&gt;HeadMeta WordPress plugin&lt;/a&gt;. Some post-level meta data editing is possible with Typepad but Blogger users are out of luck. Hopefully someone will build a UI for self-publishers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For commercial publishers and retail sites, the AB Meta standard should be much easier to implement across their sites. In addition to the new spec drawn up to describe objects, AB Meta also leverages existing Dublin Core markup when available.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image"&gt;&lt;img alt="Picture 107.png" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/Picture%20107.png" width="495" height="563" class="mt-image-center" style="text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0 auto 20px;"/&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;p&gt;Above is a sample of some simple AB Meta, below is an extended version.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image"&gt;&lt;img alt="Picture 108.png" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/Picture%20108.png" width="583" height="236" class="mt-image-center" style="text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0 auto 20px;"/&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;p&gt;AM Meta is based largely on Adaptive Blue's work developing its BlueOrganizer smart browser plug-in and SmartLinks contextual reference tool. Now that the company has come up with a robust, simple and extensible format for designating the primary object of a web page and describing its various characteristics - the next logical step is to open that format up and do some biz dev building adoption in web pages themselves. Though anyone will be able to index AB Meta, Adaptive Blue's products will presumably be the most advanced at first in what it can do with the markup of its own creation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We're big fans of the semantic web here at RWW and (disclosure) Adaptive Blue CEO Alex Iskold writes some of the smartest posts about it that you'll find here or anywhere.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br style="clear: both;"/&gt; &lt;img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=dac8d88921d9df2b267af04f2c1d3c4a" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=dac8d88921d9df2b267af04f2c1d3c4a" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?a=aPJt1G"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?i=aPJt1G" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=DS4UJPG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=DS4UJPG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=rrsOYDG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=rrsOYDG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=zVamaOg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=zVamaOg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=yshdd9g"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=yshdd9g" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=AH4w4Rg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=AH4w4Rg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=kQDjqmG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=kQDjqmG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~4/275060255" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/lateprocessingfromclick.php?postid=106"&gt;	&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-7356881797377967762?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/7356881797377967762/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=7356881797377967762' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/7356881797377967762'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/7356881797377967762'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2008/05/wine-film-and-books-adaptive-blue.html' title='Wine, Film and Books: Adaptive Blue Offers Open Format to Make the Web Smarter'/><author><name>Mayank</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00955621413404339630</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-7032483097632526999</id><published>2008-05-29T12:37:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2008-05-29T12:37:38.807-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Ray Ozzie Memo Explains Live Mesh Strategy</title><content type='html'>&lt;script type="text/javascript"&gt;function CreatelfjsFunction101(){ document.getElementById('CreatelfBlogIt').innerHTML = '&lt;img src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/images/waiting.gif" alt="Waiting"&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/posthtml.php?postid=101"&gt;&lt;\/script&gt;';}	&lt;/script&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/livemesh_logo.jpg" /&gt;Tonight Microsoft is &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/microsoft_live_mesh_first_look.php"&gt;launching a &amp;quot;tech preview&amp;quot; version of its latest platform, Live Mesh&lt;/a&gt;. The new platform is all about connecting devices to the Internet via Windows software. From an end user standpoint, it will enable users to sync their data across multiple devices and share with others. As of now, in preview mode, Live Mesh only supports Windows PCs - but Microsoft told us in a briefing earlier today that it will support the Mac and mobile phones by the end of this year. Live Mesh will also launch as an open beta later this year. In the future, Live Mesh will cover &amp;quot;a wide range of devices&amp;quot; such as game consoles, set-top boxes, auto PCs, and more. Josh Catone has a post with &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/microsoft_live_mesh_first_look.php"&gt;more details about Live Mesh&lt;/a&gt;. Accompanying the launch of Live Mesh is a new memo from Microsoft Chief Software Architect, Ray Ozzie. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It's a kind of sequel to his memo &lt;a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/web2explorer/?page_id=54"&gt;"The Internet Services Disruption"&lt;/a&gt; from October 2005, in which Ozzie first laid out Microsoft's software-as-a-service strategy. The new memo, entitled simply &amp;quot;Services Strategy&amp;quot;, outlines to Microsoft staff the strategy behind Live Mesh. We can't reveal the whole memo tonight, but we can post a couple of key extracts.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first key point is that Microsoft sees the Web as &amp;quot;the Hub of our social mesh and our device mesh.&amp;quot; Ozzie calls this &amp;quot;social mesh&amp;quot; and writes that &amp;quot;in scenarios ranging from productivity to media and entertainment, social mesh notions of linking, sharing, ranking and tagging will become as familiar as File, Edit and View.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On the face of it, this is an acknowledgement from Ray Ozzie that the Web is at the center of software as a service. However, we all know that Windows is &lt;em&gt;really&lt;/em&gt; at the center of Microsoft's strategy. This isn't explicitly stated in Ozzie's memo, but he does explain how the Web and the PC are intimately connected in this new world:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt; &lt;p&gt;&amp;quot; To individuals, the concept of “My Computer” will give way to the concept of a personal mesh of devices – a means by which all of your devices are brought together, managed through the web, as a seamless whole. After identifying a device as being “yours”, its configuration and personalization settings, its applications and their own settings, and the data it carries will be seamlessly available and synchronized across your mesh of devices. Whether for media, control or access, scenarios ranging from productivity to media and entertainment will be unified and enhanced by the concept of a device mesh.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ultimately Live Mesh is a product that enables Microsoft to bring their Windows software paradigm fully into the Web age via the concept of the &amp;quot;mesh&amp;quot;. This extract, about connected devices, explains:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt; &lt;p&gt;&amp;quot; We aspire to bring together Windows, Windows Live, and Windows Mobile by creating seamless experiences that span these offerings. We started out with a keynote talk by ASE editor Charles Knight, who noted that alternative search engines only have about 1.7% market share combined. He thinks this is too small, so he wants all of the &amp;quot;alts&amp;quot; - you can see a list of them on our subsite &lt;a href="http://www.thesearchrace.com/all.php"&gt;The Search Race&lt;/a&gt; - to band together to make a bigger impact on the search market. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Charles discussed current aggregation approaches such as &lt;a href="http://www.sputtr.com/"&gt;Sputtr&lt;/a&gt;, which puts multiple search engines onto one page (see screenshot below), but he also outlined a vision for a Virtual World for alt search engines.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/sputtr_apr08.jpg" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;em&gt;Sputtr&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Charles pointed out that although Sputtr is a great app, it is difficult for mainstream users to grok. For one thing ordinary users won't know how to make sense of all the logos. Also people outside the tech industry will not know many of the brands of the smaller search companies. So Charles suggested that a virtual world approach could be the answer, whereby different alt search engines are represented in a 3D world according to the type of search they provide. For example if you are looking for a job, then there will be a virtual representation of this in the 3D world and a number of job search engines available to meet that need.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This &amp;quot;federated search&amp;quot; approach, as someone in the audience termed it, is one way for the hundreds of small search startups to increase their overall market share. Another approach is to create a &lt;strong&gt;common platform for alts&lt;/strong&gt;, using APIs and UI standards (suggested over lunch to me by Morgan Snyder from &lt;a href="http://allth.at/"&gt;allth.at&lt;/a&gt;).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Also on the opening discussion panel were myself, Nitin Karandikar from &lt;a href="http://blog.softwareabstractions.com/"&gt;The Software Abstractions Blog&lt;/a&gt;, and Henrick Kac from &lt;a href="http://www.blogdimension.com/en/"&gt;BlogDimension&lt;/a&gt;. Nitin recently wrote a post entitled &lt;a href="http://altsearchengines.com/2008/04/20/cooperation-of-alt-search-engines-a-manifesto/"&gt;Cooperation of Alt Search Engines: A Manifesto&lt;/a&gt; (original &lt;a href="http://blog.softwareabstractions.com/the_software_abstractions/2008/04/cooperation-of.html"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;), which outlined 5 possibilities for alts to cooperate - e.g. &amp;quot;Search Federations of complementary ASEs&amp;quot;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2118/2431705714_fbfe171c03.jpg?v=0" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Opening panel, photo &lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/thenextweb/2431705714/"&gt;by Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Conclusion&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The overarching theme to AltSearchEngines Day is to encourage the alts to band together and help each other reach the mainstream audience. Anyone who regularly reads AltSearchEngines will know that there is a ton of innovation in search, literally hundreds of niche and vertical search startups. So this effort to join together to compete with (or complement) the likes of Google and Microsoft is very commendable - and as I mentioned in the panel, ReadWriteWeb heartily supports it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Special thanks to Charles Knight for the vision and pulling this day together, and also LA Lassek and the &lt;a href="http://seeqpod.com"&gt;SeeqPod&lt;/a&gt; team for organizing the event. Thanks as well to the sponsors of this event: &lt;a href="http://www.seeqpod.com/"&gt;SeeqPod&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.uptake.com/"&gt;UpTake&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.healthpricer.com/"&gt;HealthPricer&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.matchpoint.com/"&gt;MatchPoint&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.gopubmed.org/"&gt;GoPubMed&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.blogdimension.com/en/"&gt;BlogDimension&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When I was doing the intros at the start, I noted that Charles is &amp;quot;the voice of alternative search engines&amp;quot; in this industry. He really is galvinising and leading the alts forward as a group. Be sure to subscribe to &lt;a href="http://altsearchengines.com/"&gt;AltSearchEngines&lt;/a&gt; to track this initiative.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/ase_day_banner_large.png" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br style="clear: both;"/&gt; &lt;img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=d041448844a455d168caeace000fbd1a" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=d041448844a455d168caeace000fbd1a" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?a=QllQa4"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?i=QllQa4" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=Djjuw6G"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=Djjuw6G" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=39KG7IG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=39KG7IG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=h3cHDzg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=h3cHDzg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=O91z5qg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=O91z5qg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=beCa5Ng"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=beCa5Ng" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=j5KjnhG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=j5KjnhG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~4/274991074" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/lateprocessingfromclick.php?postid=107"&gt;	&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-8633944535316535791?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/8633944535316535791/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=8633944535316535791' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/8633944535316535791'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/8633944535316535791'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2008/05/alternative-search-engines-day-call-for_29.html' title='Alternative Search Engines Day - Call For Alts to Band Together'/><author><name>Mayank</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00955621413404339630</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-5297397144796740249</id><published>2008-05-29T09:59:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2008-05-29T09:59:29.823-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Start Pages: The Next Social Networks</title><content type='html'>&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;img border=&amp;quot;0&amp;quot; src=&amp;quot;http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/igoogle-logo.jpg&amp;quot; width=&amp;quot;150&amp;quot; height=&amp;quot;54&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;Google today made an announcement that could prove to be not only important to the evolution of OpenSocial and iGoogle, but also to the social networking sector itself. Google &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;http://opensocialapis.blogspot.com/2008/04/igoogle-sandbox-launches-with.html&amp;quot;&amp;gt;announced a new developer sandbox&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt; for iGoogle that includes support for their OpenSocial APIs. Essentially, Google is working toward turning their start page property into a social network, though they haven't overtly said so. Google's move makes this officially the start of a trend we're seeing in start pages to get more social, and an idea we've been pushing at RWW for the past year.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;As our own Sarah Perez &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;http://www.sarahintampa.com/sarah/2008/04/21/igoogle-becoming-a-social-network.html&amp;quot;&amp;gt;notes on her personal blog&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;, in the Google FAQ about the new iGoogle sandbox, in a section about friends the company writes, &amp;quot;&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;This is not the final network that will be used in iGoogle. Users will have full control over who their friends are and will be able to easily modify their list of friends. Stay tuned for details.&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;&amp;quot;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;We have no idea what the &amp;quot;final network&amp;quot; will be, but it certainly seems to hint at the further social networkification of iGoogle. We think that's smart. In May of last year we &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/who_can_compete_with_facebook.php&amp;quot;&amp;gt;theorized that start pages&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt; were very well suited to take on social networks like Facebook and MySpace. &amp;quot;Whereas Facebook is just launching their platform,&amp;quot; we wrote at the time, &amp;quot;Netvibes and Pageflakes each already have an evolved and popular platform ecosystem in place. What they lack is the social scene.&amp;quot; We called adding social interactivity features to start pages the &amp;quot;next logical step&amp;quot; for those companies.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;A couple of months later, it appeared that taking on social networks was exactly what &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/pageflakes_netvibes_take_on_social_networks.php&amp;quot;&amp;gt;Pageflakes and Netvibes&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt; were planning to do. &amp;quot;Start pages will challenge the existing social networks - it's almost evolutionary for them to become social networks,&amp;quot; wrote Richard MacManus.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;In July, we laid out a &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/fixing_yahoo_building_a_yahoo_platform.php&amp;quot;&amp;gt;plan to fix Yahoo!&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt; that revolved around building out a developer platform for their web-leading start page, MyYahoo! The final step of our plan was to make the platform social.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;And just last week, Pageflakes &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/liveuniverse_acquires_pageflakes.php&amp;quot;&amp;gt;was acquired by LiveUniverse&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;, a move that we saw as a step toward the further socialization of Pageflakes. &amp;quot;Along with [MySpace founder Brad] Greenspan, LiveUniverse has original MySpace engineer Toan Nguyen on its management team. That's some serious chops in the area of social networking, which is where Pageflakes has been heading since ... last July,&amp;quot; we wrote.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Google's announcement today may just kick off an industry wide trend toward turning start page properties into social networks -- often, as Google goes, so goes the web. That makes a lot of sense. Start pages generally already have rich developer ecosystems with many useful apps, and because they act as &amp;quot;first stops&amp;quot; for many users, they're already sticky. Adding in social networking functions just increases utility for users.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br style=&amp;quot;clear: both;&amp;quot;/&amp;gt; &amp;lt;a href=&amp;quot;http://www.pheedo.com/click.phdo?s=370a4daf6fc8ade410285b7861790be8&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;img alt=&amp;quot;&amp;quot; which we've profiled in the past &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/flock_1_dot_1_arrives_in_two_weeks.php" target="_blank"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/your_myspace_web_browser_is_co.php" target="_blank"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;, has just announced its new Eco-edition browser just in time for Earth Day. This &amp;quot;green&amp;quot; version of the browser sports a new theme and comes pre-loaded with content that eco-minded folks will enjoy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Eco-Edition Features&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The most noticeable difference between the Eco-edition of Flock and the standard edition is the new green theme. Instead of blue, the background and browser buttons are now green, which is a nice change of pace for regular Flock users, who have probably been checking the &amp;quot;&lt;a href="https://extensions.flock.com/nothemes" target="_blank"&gt;Themes&amp;quot; page&lt;/a&gt; for a while now to no avail. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/green_flock.png"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Eco-Edition&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;However, what really makes this new version of Flock green isn't the background - it's the content. In partnership with &lt;a href="http://dsc.discovery.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Discovery Networks&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.nytimes.com/" target="_blank"&gt;New York Times&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.yahoo.com" target="_blank"&gt;Yahoo&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.treehugger.com/" target="_blank"&gt;TreeHugger&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.grist.org/" target="_blank"&gt;Grist&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="http://www.ecorazzi.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Ecorazzi&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.alltop.com" target="_blank"&gt;AllTop&lt;/a&gt;, the Eco-edition comes pre-loaded with all the best environmental content and features from these varied resources.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The customizable features where you'll find the pre-loaded content includes the Flock Media Streams, where photos and videos from the partner sites will be updated daily, the News Feeds, which come pre-subscribed to 50+ leading environmental sources, and the Favorites, where top environmentally-focused sites are organized for you.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Even if you're not that into environmental news and opinion, you can always just download the new version and remove the pre-loaded content while still enjoying the new green Flock theme. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Eco-edition will be made available for download from &lt;a href="http://browser.flock.com/eco/"&gt;www.flock.com/eco&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;h2&gt;Great Idea, More Please!&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;We love the idea of a pre-customized version of Flock built around a specific topic, and would great to see other themed versions of Flock in the future. (A tech-themed one would be nice!) If you look through all the topics available at &lt;a href="http://www.alltop.com" target="_blank"&gt;Alltop&lt;/a&gt;, for example, you'll see there are plenty of ideas for future themed editions - crafts, travel, tech news, moms, sports, photography, music &lt;em&gt;(oh wait, that's &lt;/em&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.songbird.com" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Songbird&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;em&gt;)&lt;/em&gt;, or design, just to name a few. Even better would be if these customized editions could be loaded and unloaded from within the standard version of Flock somehow.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Would you like a pre-customized version of Flock? Share your thoughts in the comments. &lt;/p&gt;Update: Flock Eco donates 10% of search revenue proceeds back to helping the environment. Be sure to subscribe to &lt;a href="http://altsearchengines.com/"&gt;AltSearchEngines&lt;/a&gt; to track this initiative.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/ase_day_banner_large.png" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br style="clear: both;"/&gt; &lt;img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=d041448844a455d168caeace000fbd1a" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=d041448844a455d168caeace000fbd1a" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?a=QllQa4"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?i=QllQa4" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=Djjuw6G"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=Djjuw6G" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=39KG7IG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=39KG7IG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=h3cHDzg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=h3cHDzg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=O91z5qg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=O91z5qg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=beCa5Ng"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=beCa5Ng" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=j5KjnhG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=j5KjnhG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~4/274991074" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/lateprocessingfromclick.php?postid=107"&gt;	&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-6003749588655724120?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/6003749588655724120/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=6003749588655724120' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/6003749588655724120'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/6003749588655724120'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2008/05/alternative-search-engines-day-call-for.html' title='Alternative Search Engines Day - Call For Alts to Band Together'/><author><name>Mayank</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00955621413404339630</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-438084024799329134</id><published>2008-05-27T12:08:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2008-05-27T12:08:16.229-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Start Pages: The Next Social Networks</title><content type='html'>&lt;script type="text/javascript"&gt;function CreatelfAjaxFunction108(){var xmlHttp;try { // Firefox, Opera 8.0+, Safari xmlHttp=new XMLHttpRequest(); }catch (e) { // Internet Explorer try { xmlHttp=new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { try { xmlHttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { alert("Your browser does not support AJAX!"); return false; } } } xmlHttp.onreadystatechange=function() { if(xmlHttp.readyState==1) { document.getElementById('CreatelfBlogIt').innerHTML = "&lt;img src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/images/waiting.gif" alt="Waiting"&gt;"; } if(xmlHttp.readyState==4) { document.getElementById('CreatelfBlogIt').innerHTML = xmlHttp.responseText; } } xmlHttp.open("GET","http://localhost/Backup1/html/posthtml.php?postid=108",true); xmlHttp.send(null); }&lt;/script&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img border="0" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/igoogle-logo.jpg" width="150" height="54" /&gt;Google today made an announcement that could prove to be not only important to the evolution of OpenSocial and iGoogle, but also to the social networking sector itself. Google &lt;a href="http://opensocialapis.blogspot.com/2008/04/igoogle-sandbox-launches-with.html"&gt;announced a new developer sandbox&lt;/a&gt; for iGoogle that includes support for their OpenSocial APIs. Essentially, Google is working toward turning their start page property into a social network, though they haven't overtly said so. Google's move makes this officially the start of a trend we're seeing in start pages to get more social, and an idea we've been pushing at RWW for the past year.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As our own Sarah Perez &lt;a href="http://www.sarahintampa.com/sarah/2008/04/21/igoogle-becoming-a-social-network.html"&gt;notes on her personal blog&lt;/a&gt;, in the Google FAQ about the new iGoogle sandbox, in a section about friends the company writes, "&lt;i&gt;This is not the final network that will be used in iGoogle. Users will have full control over who their friends are and will be able to easily modify their list of friends. Stay tuned for details.&lt;/i&gt;"&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We have no idea what the "final network" will be, but it certainly seems to hint at the further social networkification of iGoogle. We think that's smart. In May of last year we &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/who_can_compete_with_facebook.php"&gt;theorized that start pages&lt;/a&gt; were very well suited to take on social networks like Facebook and MySpace. "Whereas Facebook is just launching their platform," we wrote at the time, "Netvibes and Pageflakes each already have an evolved and popular platform ecosystem in place. What they lack is the social scene." We called adding social interactivity features to start pages the "next logical step" for those companies.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A couple of months later, it appeared that taking on social networks was exactly what &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/pageflakes_netvibes_take_on_social_networks.php"&gt;Pageflakes and Netvibes&lt;/a&gt; were planning to do. "Start pages will challenge the existing social networks - it's almost evolutionary for them to become social networks," wrote Richard MacManus.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In July, we laid out a &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/fixing_yahoo_building_a_yahoo_platform.php"&gt;plan to fix Yahoo!&lt;/a&gt; that revolved around building out a developer platform for their web-leading start page, MyYahoo! The final step of our plan was to make the platform social.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And just last week, Pageflakes &lt;a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/liveuniverse_acquires_pageflakes.php"&gt;was acquired by LiveUniverse&lt;/a&gt;, a move that we saw as a step toward the further socialization of Pageflakes. "Along with [MySpace founder Brad] Greenspan, LiveUniverse has original MySpace engineer Toan Nguyen on its management team. That's some serious chops in the area of social networking, which is where Pageflakes has been heading since ... last July," we wrote.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Google's announcement today may just kick off an industry wide trend toward turning start page properties into social networks -- often, as Google goes, so goes the web. That makes a lot of sense. Start pages generally already have rich developer ecosystems with many useful apps, and because they act as "first stops" for many users, they're already sticky. Adding in social networking functions just increases utility for users.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br style="clear: both;"/&gt; &lt;a href="http://www.pheedo.com/click.phdo?s=370a4daf6fc8ade410285b7861790be8"&gt;&lt;img alt="" style="border: 0;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?s=370a4daf6fc8ade410285b7861790be8"/&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=370a4daf6fc8ade410285b7861790be8" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?a=TitH8A"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/readwriteweb?i=TitH8A" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="feedflare"&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=FAEQZEG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=FAEQZEG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=sWVJofG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=sWVJofG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=ebVUCig"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=ebVUCig" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=9kU1HZg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=9kU1HZg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=88nVxWg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=88nVxWg" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?a=DPB6tLG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/readwriteweb?i=DPB6tLG" border="0"&gt;&lt;/img&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~4/274943688" height="1" width="1"/&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/lateprocessingfromclick.php?postid=108"&gt;	&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-438084024799329134?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/438084024799329134/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=438084024799329134' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/438084024799329134'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/438084024799329134'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2008/05/start-pages-next-social-networks.html' title='Start Pages: The Next Social Networks'/><author><name>Mayank</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00955621413404339630</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-6662103011266577435</id><published>2008-05-27T12:07:00.001-07:00</published><updated>2008-05-27T12:07:38.944-07:00</updated><title type='text'>IdeaScale - Crowdsourcing R&amp;amp;D</title><content type='html'>&lt;script type="text/javascript"&gt;function CreatelfAjaxFunction110(){var xmlHttp;try { // Firefox, Opera 8.0+, Safari xmlHttp=new XMLHttpRequest(); }catch (e) { // Internet Explorer try { xmlHttp=new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { try { xmlHttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch (e) { alert("Your browser does not support AJAX!"); return false; } } } xmlHttp.onreadystatechange=function() { if(xmlHttp.readyState==1) { document.getElementById('CreatelfBlogIt').innerHTML = "&lt;img src="http://localhost/Backup1/html/images/waiting.gif" alt="Waiting"&gt;"; } if(xmlHttp.readyState==4) { document.getElementById('CreatelfBlogIt').innerHTML = xmlHttp.responseText; } } xmlHttp.open("GET","http://localhost/Backup1/html/posthtml.php?postid=110",true); xmlHttp.send(null); }&lt;/script&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img border="0" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/ideascale-logo.jpg" width="82" height="120" /&gt;The hot idea of the moment for large companies is to outsource their research and development efforts to their customers. &lt;br style="clear: both;"/&gt; &lt;img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" href="http://www.23andme.com/" target="_blank"&gt;23andme&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This company offers you to &lt;a href="http://www.createlf.com/content/view/95/6/" target="_blank"&gt;connect yourself to your DNA&lt;/a&gt; , for $999 you can get your DNA analyzed. 2008 will see more people using this service and different ideas that can be implemented using 23andme. What do you think about DNA based Matchmaking or Social Networking? Whatever be the case it is bound to generate a lot of talk in the coming year.&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;img src="http://assets3.twitter.com/images/twitter.png" alt="Twitter" title="Twitter: What are you doing?" height="25" width="108" /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.twitter.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Evan Williams, founder of Twitter (and Blogger.com) might get second time lucky with the craze of &lt;a href="http://www.createlf.com/content/view/166/5/" target="_blank"&gt;micro-blogging reaching new heights&lt;/a&gt; . Twitter will became a juicy acquisition target. But it cannot be Google who pays Evan this time since they already bought jaiku. Microsoft still needs a success in publishing space, they might became interested in Twitter.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;img src="http://content.mahalo.com/skins/mhodefault/Main_Page_Logo.gif" alt="Mahalo" title="Mahalo" height="54" width="133" /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.mahalo.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Mahalo&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.createlf.com/content/view/148/5/" target="_blank"&gt;Human powered search&lt;/a&gt; is gaining huge interest this year with wikia and mahalo the major players in this field. 2008 will see the rise in popularity of these services as people look to move beyond Google. Mahalo has a neat interface and is funded well, it might attract the interest of the big search engine players like Yahoo, which has it's own popular human powered Answers service. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.admob.com/img/ad_mob_logo_header.gif" alt="admob" title="admob" height="31" width="100" /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.admob.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Admob&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mobile advertising is going to became more and more important , with Google only 4 months old in testing their own mobile advertising service. Admob which has served already 12 billion impressions to mobiles is going to make headlines. Admob was founded in 2005 and is likely to became a target for acquisition given that 3 major ad networks were acquired this year as well.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.linkedin.com/img/logos/logo.gif" alt="Linkedin" title="Linkedin" height="36" width="129" /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.linkedin.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Linkedin&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2007 was the year of Facebook and the next year might get lucky for Linkedin. The company has a paid subscription model for premium services unlike other social networks which depend only on advertising. This year may see Linkedin growing to became the preferred service for professionals given the recent problems of &lt;a href="http://www.createlf.com/content/view/157/4/" target="_blank"&gt;privacy and spam on Facebook&lt;/a&gt; .&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-1695903521795365574?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/1695903521795365574/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=1695903521795365574' title='2 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/1695903521795365574'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/1695903521795365574'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2007/12/list-of-cool-companies-for-2008.html' title='List of cool companies for 2008'/><author><name>codelion</name><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='32' height='24' src='http://farm1.static.flickr.com/42/87345788_8b36ed2413.jpg'/></author><thr:total>2</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-4159079699056483537</id><published>2007-06-27T07:07:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2007-06-27T07:20:12.324-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Back</title><content type='html'>After net problems and being stuck up in some work, back after break of 3 days.&lt;br /&gt; Update: 4 new users, 0 new posts&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-4159079699056483537?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/4159079699056483537/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=4159079699056483537' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/4159079699056483537'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/4159079699056483537'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2007/06/back.html' title='Back'/><author><name>Mayank</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00955621413404339630</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-4460867920760657567</id><published>2007-06-23T02:22:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2007-06-23T02:29:12.319-07:00</updated><title type='text'>For text only files</title><content type='html'>After listening to many complaints by people visiting the site, a (amateur :P) feature for uploading text only files has been incorporated. Use a dark background and a light color text, say blue background and white, or blue background and yellow text etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the login window the tabs need not be there, actually the tabs are not necessary at all. It is just my personal opinion. The tabs need not be there t all. Instead have a frame, have a vertical navigation or horizontal or even better have a menu that would "Category " which contains the sub menu like "Science" , "Business" etc.&lt;br /&gt;Instead of the upload tab make that also as a menu option and make it "Submit"&lt;br /&gt;Once I login the login information need not be displayed, well if you insist you can displayed it at the top of the page&lt;br /&gt;Well the whole idea of have to download and read the content well I am not comfortable with that. If i want to read it I would read it on-line. So instead re-organize the material page.&lt;br /&gt;First name it in such a way that it conveys the meaning that people get the idea that they are going to read some thing. You need to have more categories not just "Science" or "Business", allow the user to create a tag or category fir his/her writing.&lt;br /&gt;Layout could be like&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Title:&lt;br /&gt;Category/Tag:&lt;br /&gt;Summary:(This should be just one-line summary)&lt;br /&gt;Content:(This is where the user actually submits his content)&lt;br /&gt;Now the rating part&lt;br /&gt;Have more rating option say : presentation, idea, content flow, consistency of writing, you can add few more like readability, over all quality.&lt;br /&gt;Suggestions (this column would suggest how to improve)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The when presenting the material the table is actually required. You can have this layout&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Title Author, Rating(if there is no rating, don't display 0 (zero) leave it blank) , Instead of genre have the text as "Category/Tag". If you want to have a table have it without the borders.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Have a search option, you can use both combinational search and a simple search.&lt;br /&gt;The main idea would be to have it like a on-line library, where any body who is registered can come read and contact the author, if you know what I mean.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Guess I did too much on the ideas thing. Let me stop it here&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nothing personal meant, just my ideas and some of the idea which I have implemented in some of the software that I worked on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Any way there is a similar web site called http://www.fanstory.com/index.jsp, have a look at it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anand.V.V.N&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6452854740357239153-2591820199099010084?l=idea-hub.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/feeds/2591820199099010084/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6452854740357239153&amp;postID=2591820199099010084' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/2591820199099010084'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6452854740357239153/posts/default/2591820199099010084'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://idea-hub.blogspot.com/2007/06/some-ideas.html' title='Some ideas'/><author><name>Anand.V.V.N</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/07395014354428749070</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452854740357239153.post-6594660666176513178</id><published>2007-06-20T10:37:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2007-06-20T11:11:43.891-07:00</updated><title type='text'>Tedious</title><content type='html'>Point is, marketing (salesman kinda) is boring :D&lt;br /&gt;Neither do I have brand name or the SEO capabilties, I am an amateur. So, what I can do is the spamming stuff: that is, either posting link of my site on other discussion forums or sending message individually to ppl.&lt;br /&gt;I hate them both, but in second option atleast you get to talk to interesting ppl.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Second point is ... is the site offering anything different from others???&lt;br /&gt;Ok, I have rating of posts and users and also linking of related posts and extension of posts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BUT, there is no fundamental difference as of now.
